Sometimes when a person realises that they require glasses, they are able to simply choose a pair ‘off the shelf’ and purchase them. However, in some cases these glasses are not sufficient to correct a person’s visual impairment, in which case Prescription Lenses may be required.

Prescription lenses are only prescribed to someone following an eye test conducted by an optician or optometrist, who will deem whether the patient’s vision is impaired to such an extent that he or she requires a unique prescription to meet their requirement and hopefully correct their individual visual problems.

When writing a prescription for lenses, the optician or optometrist takes into consideration not only the physical state of both eyes, but also the strength of the patient’s near and far distance vision. The patient’s unique Physiognomy in regards to their eyes, such as the space between the cornea and the lens is also incorporated to produce a unique prescription.

There is a wide range of providers of prescription lenses who are able to produce lenses that can meet almost any need of any user since no two people’s eyes are the same. For instance, bifocal lenses combine both distance and reading distances into a single lens with a dividing line. This means that the user has effectively two pairs of glasses in one as they are able to see in the distance as well as read items up close. This is especially useful when the user reaches middle age, the stage when humans typically suffer from ‘presbyopia’, meaning that we are unable to focus on an item up close.

Progressive or ‘varifocal’ lenses on the other hand are similar to bifocals in that they allow the user to see both long and short distances. However, unlike bifocals, they do not have a dividing line as they the prescriptions are blended into a single lens. This in turn allows the user to also focus on middle-distance objects such as computer screens and notice boards.
