Varifocals are a special type of lens which incorporate the prescriptions for distance vision, mid vision and near vision, all in the same lens. Varifocals are made up of three lens sections, each section performing a different function. To see clearly at a distance you would look through the top of the lens. The lower part of the lens is to see clearly at a short distance, this may be useful for reading and detailed work. If you look through the middle of the lens, you will be able to see clearly at a mid distance.
